Dodgers Set to Call Up Promising Infield Prospect Amid Injuries

The feeling about Edman isn't much better. He tweaked his right ankle on Sunday at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox and was scratched from the initial lineup Monday night. The ankle is something that's been bothering Edman throughout the season, and he wasn't available, even in a pinch-hit role, on Monday.

“Obviously, if I couldn’t hit him tonight, for him not to be able to play three innings of defense isn’t a great feeling,” Roberts said (h/t The Athletic).

Roberts considered Edman "day-to-day," and said Kim is "fighting it." Not words you want to hear for either infielder if you hope them to contribute to the lineup soon. However, Edman believes he could be back relatively soon.

“I don’t feel like this is that big a deal,” said Edman, who also tweaked the ankle in early June but didn’t have to go on the IL at the time. “I was just at a point where I didn’t feel like I could run full speed today.”

If either player goes on the injured list, it would put the Dodgers' total at 12 players on the IL. However, all the injuries have now opened the door for Freeland. The Dodgers' top infield prospect was their third-round pick in 2022, and he's put together a solid season at Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2025.

Freeman is hitting .253 with an OPS near .800, and he's hit 12 home runs and collected 71 RBI. The infielder has played both shortstop and third base, which will give the Dodger's versatility in their banged up infield as Muncy could return soon.

With the 2025 MLB trade deadline just days away, Freeman is one of the prospects the Dodgers have been listening to offers on, but haven't wanted to give up. With the number of injuries, Los Angeles give the prospect a chance to prove himself to stay rather than use him to acquire new talent.
