The Los Angeles Dodgers are continuing to play well overall. In fact, Dave Roberts earned his 1,000th career managerial win with the team’s 9-3 victory against the Athletics on Tuesday night. However, Los Angeles has missed the presence of catcher Will Smith, who is on the injured list due to neck inflammation. Smith’s injury return timeline is still uncertain at the moment.
According to MLB.com, Smith could “possibly” return in July, but that seemingly is not guaranteed. MLB.com also reports that he is not doing any baseball activities and is likely not going to return “before the end of the first half.”
Smith, 31, is hitting .249/.338/.382 across 52 games played this season. He has recorded six home runs and five doubles as well.
Do the Dodgers want Smith to return sooner rather than later? Absolutely. After all, he is one of the best catchers in baseball. With that being said, LA can certainly be patient right now.
The Dodgers’ 56-30 record is the best mark in the sport. They are sitting in an especially comfortable position in the National League West standings, as they hold a 12-game lead over the second place San Diego Padres.
Los Angeles has now won four consecutive games overall following Tuesday’s victory. The Dodgers are looking to clinch a three-game series sweep against the Athletics on the road on Wednesday night. First pitch for the final contest of the series is scheduled for 9:40 PM EST.
Meanwhile, updates on Will Smith’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
