While still very early in the season, it’s tough to get a feel for what the Los Angeles Dodgers are.
Of course, one could point to their star power and suggest that the Dodgers are the best team in MLB, and they’d likely be right.
On paper, the Dodgers are loaded, and if things go as planned, nobody should beat this team come October.
However, injuries are a factor, and the Dodgers have already taken note of this. The team has dealt with injuries on both sides of the baseball, and in the bullpen, which could become the biggest issue in the postseason.
It isn’t a question of what the Dodgers will do at the deadline. Everybody knows this team will add somebody, even if it’s a relief arm. Andrew Friedman won’t sit back and let this squad do nothing.
In a proposed trade to find bullpen help, Newsweek’s Drew VonScio pitched the idea of them trading for St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Ryan Helsley in a deal that would involve Zyhir Hope and Noah Miller, two top 25 prospects in the Dodgers system.
“The Dodgers must add to the bullpen to be successful in the postseason, there’s no question about that," he wrote. "While they have a variety of pitchers on the injured list currently, they can’t rely on those players to perform or on internal improvements.
“Ryan Helsley is set to be a free agent after this season, so he will have the most suitors among contenders. As a result, the Cardinals will take the highest bidder when it comes to dealing their closer. Los Angeles will part with another top-10 prospect in this deal, but they’ll do so knowing they’ll be able to extend Helsley prior to the end of the season.”
Helsley is expected to be available, but it’s uncertain when the St. Louis Cardinals will move on from him.
When he’s at his best, one could argue that he’s the top reliever in baseball. However, with the right-hander hitting free agency after this winter, St. Louis could move on from him and get assets along the way.
