The Los Angeles Dodgers are trading right-handed starting pitcher Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox. In return, Boston is sending outfield prospects James Tibbs and Zach Ehrhard back to Los Angeles. This is the fourth deal the Dodgers have made in the last 24 hours.

Dodgers Trade Starter Dustin May to Red Sox

The Writing on the Wall

With the return of Blake Snell on Saturday, it looks like the Dodgers are moving to a six-man rotation. Unfortunately, May is the odd man out. Evidently, the Dodgers didn’t see him fitting in the bullpen. Added to this was the right-hander’s injury history, free-agent status, and the lack of an effective third pitch; it seems that May’s days in Dodger blue were limited. The right-hander has a record of 6-7 with Los Angeles this season. His 4.85 ERA reflects a tendency to have one bad inning per start. He also has a predilection to give up the long ball. This season, He was slated as the Dodgers’ number five starter. Ideally, he will most likely be added to the Red Sox rotation for depth.

The Return Package

The two outfielders the Dodgers received in return will probably remain in the minors for the rest of the 2025 season. James Tibbs III may have the most upside of the two. Tibbs was part of the package the Red Sox received in the Rafael Devers trade. He was one of the top prospects of the San Francisco Giants organization. Additionally, he was their first-round pick in 2024.

Underwhelming Haul?

Compared to other clubs, the Dodgers didn’t attract many headlines. All things considered, the price for high-impact players appears to have been astronomically high. Per usual, President of Baseball Operations  Andrew Friedman is loath to part with top prospects. Is there more than meets the eye when one looks at the details?  Probably. Pending the healthy return of injured players, did the Dodgers do enough for an October run? We will find out.
