The Los Angeles Dodgers addressed their pitching staff in spades during the offseason but mounting injuries once again have forced them to tap well into organizational depth.

At present time, the Dodgers have 13 pitchers currently on the injured list. Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech were recently part of that group as well before returning earlier this month.

The Dodgers have cycled through several relief pitchers over the past few weeks and now appear to have made another addition.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Boston Red Sox are trading Zach Penrod to the Dodgers:

It’s not yet clear who the Dodgers are trading to the Red Sox in exchange for the left-handed reliever.

Penrod was designated for assignment earlier this week in the wake of the Red Sox trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello and James Tibbs III. Boston needed to make room on their 40-man roster due to only removing one player from it in Devers while acquiring two (Harrison and Hicks).

Penrod presumably will report to Triple-A Oklahoma City but could factor into the Dodgers’ bullpen at some point this season.

Zach Penrod bio & stats

Penrod began his professional career by signing a Minor League contract with the Texas Rangers after going undrafted in 2018.

Penrod was released from the Rangers organization in June 2020 and went on to pitch in the Pioneer League (independent baseball) before signing with the Red Sox in August 2023.

The Indiana native went on to make his MLB debut last season, pitching to a 2.25 ERA and 1.75 WHIP across seven appearances for Boston.

Penrod made one appearance for the Florida Complex League affiliate, and was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in six games (two starts) for Triple-A Worcester this season.
