The final out of the 2024 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees was recorded by Walker Buehler, who struck out Alex Verdugo to clinch the Dodgers' eighth World Series title in franchise history.
In coordination with The Memorabilia Network, the Dodgers auctioned the ball Buehler used to record the final out on March 21.
Fox 11 reports that the auction's proceeds will go to people recently affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. As of Friday night, the highest bid for the baseball was $250,000.
The auction for the baseball ends this weekend, and catcher Will Smith, who received the final out of last year's World Series from Buehler, spoke with Fox 11 about what Los Angeles means to his family.
Smith and his wife, Cara, founded the Catching Hope Foundation in 2021 to help underprivileged children.
"Los Angeles has not only become home to us, but it has welcomed and supported our family since 2019," Smith and his wife, Cara, told Fox 11. "Our goal here is to give back and partner with the city that means so much to us in the years of rebuilding that are to come."
In January, the Dodgers organization, owner Mark Walter, and the Walter Family Foundation donated $100 million to support the rebuilding process in Southern California following the wildfires.
Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani donated $500,000 to help people, animals, and local firefighters affected by the wildfires.
The prized World Series ball was displayed at Dodger Stadium during the Dodgers' opening series against the Detroit Tigers and their most recent series against the Atlanta Braves.
