The 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers were crowned World Series champions after improbable comeback in Game 5 against the New York Yankees, erasing a five-run deficit in the fifth inning and scoring two more in the eighth to take a decided 7-6 lead.

In a season with as many twists and turns, ups and downs, trials and tribulations as the Dodgers had, there was really no more fitting ending than to have Game 3 starter Walker Buehler get the final three outs of the 2024 season.

The Dodgers fell into an early hole with Jack Flaherty on the mound as Aaron Judge finally broke out of his slump with a two-run home run and Jazz Chisholm followed it up with a solo blast of his own. Alex Verdugo’s RBI single in the second inning chased Flaherty from the game to create a nightmare scenario for the Dodgers.

After a Giancarlo Stanton home run made it a 5-0 Yankees lead, a win seemed far out of reach with Gerrit Cole cruising. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts dipped into the well of high-leverage receivers early with Michael Kopech in the fourth ahead of what turned out to be a pivotal sequence in this game.

The Yankees had been playing with fire and getting burned throughout the World Series with poor fundamental baseball and simple mistakes. And the fifth inning of Game 5 proved to be their final nail in the coffin.

Two errors and another back-breaking mistake gave the Dodgers life as Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández came up with key hits to tie the game.

The Yankees recaptured the lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, but the Dodgers rallied again in the eighth inning against an overworked Luke Weaver.

Gavin Lux put together a great at-bat to drive in the tying run on another sacrifice fly, and two batters later Mookie Betts drove in what proved to be the game winning run with a sacrifice fly of his own.

Faced with an arms shortage, the Dodgers stretched out Blake Treinen for as long as they could before Buehler entered and collected the final three outs to put them at the top of the baseball world.

The Dodgers World Series Parade is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1 and will begin at 11 a.m. PT at Gloria Molina Grand Park on Spring Street, in front of City Hall. More details found here.
