Don Mattingly Explains Orion Kerkering’s Week-Long Absence

Kerkering’s absence has been noticeable as Philadelphia manages its bullpen during a critical stretch of the season. The reliever has also dealt with a difficult second half, making his return to a regular high-leverage role more complicated.

Before the All-Star break, Kerkering held opposing hitters to a .172 batting average over his first 37 innings. His results have declined since then, with his ERA climbing to 7.64 after the break.

His last appearance came Sept. 4 against Atlanta, when he allowed a two-run homer to Mauricio Dubón. Mattingly had already indicated that Kerkering’s role would be reduced to lower-leverage situations following his recent struggles.

The toe issue now provides additional context for why Philadelphia has been cautious with the young reliever. Although Mattingly said Kerkering was available Friday, the walking boot suggests the Phillies are still taking the inflammation seriously.

Philadelphia ultimately fell to Atlanta in 11 innings, with the Braves improving to 87-61 and extending their NL East lead to five games over the Phillies.

With only 14 games remaining, the Phillies will need as much bullpen depth as possible. Getting Kerkering healthy and back on the mound could give Mattingly another option as Philadelphia prepares for the final stretch.
