As there are players on the Atlanta Braves who are in the midst of an injury recovery, one player who hasn’t been on the field for close to two months is catcher Sean Murphy. While fans have been waiting for injury updates from the Braves, manager Walt Weiss would prove to be one dealing with the 31-year-old catcher.
According to Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game, Weiss would say that Murphy is “increasing his baseball activities” and that a rehab game for the catcher is coming sooner rather than later. However, there is still no target return date for Murphy.
“Braves MGR Walt Weiss told me that C Sean Murphy is increasing his baseball activities and a rehab assignment is not far away – exact timetable is still TBD,” McAuley wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Murphy has been on Atlanta’s injured list (IL) for a significant amount of time, being put on there on May 12, two days after the catcher suffered a fractured finger in May 10’s 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on a catcher’s interference. Speaking after the May 10 contest, Murphy would express his disappointment.
“I’m pretty disappointed,” Murphy said, via MLB.com. “I’m just frustrated. There’s not much I can do at this point. It’s not how we wanted it to go. But we just have to get this [injury] better.”
Having only played in four games this season, Murphy had only recorded one hit in 14 at-bats, leading to a .071 batting average. If there was a positive that came out from Murphy’s injury, it was more opportunity for Drake Baldwin, as the 25-year-old has a .255 batting average to go along with 14 home runs and 39 RBIs.
At any rate, it remains to be seen when Murphy officially comes back for the Braves as the team continues the series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.
