The Washington Nationals informed Juan Soto that he has been traded to the San Diego Padres, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Nationals and Padres agreed in principle for a trade that sends Soto to San Diego.

Details of the deal are still being hammered out by both teams, but at the center of it is 32-year old veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer. In order for the deal to be finalized as currently constructed, Hosmer needs to waive his no-trade clause, something he has not done thus far, according to the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Enormous pressure on Hosmer to approve deal, and he might get something more out of it beyond the 3 yrs/$39M he is owed from ‘23 to ‘25. Hosmer, Soto, Bell all represented by Scott Boras, as are Gore and Wood. Players generally need to be compensated to waive no-trade protection.

Hosmer is owed $39 million over the next three years, which takes him to the age of 35. He happens to be represented by super agent Scott Boras, the same agent of Soto. Boras also reps Josh Bell and two Padres prospects included in the trade.

Negotiations have started to give compensation to Hosmer for waiving his no-trade clause to go to Washington.

If and when he does approve the trade to Washington, the Nationals will get what’s considered “the most substantive deal” in MLB’s deadline history, according to New York Post’s Joel Sherman.

In addition to Hosmer, the Nationals will receive left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, shortstop C.J. Abrams, outfielders Robert Hassell III and James Wood, as well as righty Jarlin Susana. All are 23 years of age or younger out of Hosmer.

The clock is ticking on Hosmer’s decision before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. EST trade deadline.
