ESPN Films confirms multi-part docuseries on Derek Jeter for 2022

Legendary New York Yankees shortstop and current Miami Marlins part-owner Derek Jeter has been a popular-yet-polarizing figure throughout his decades in big-league baseball. Like NBA royalty Michael Jordan, Jeter will have his own "Last Dance" produced by ESPN Films.

On Tuesday, ESPN and MLB confirmed the development of a multi-part documentary series on Jeter's life and career. "The Captain," which will debut on ESPN and ESPN+ in 2022, will detail Jeter's on- and off-the-field exploits during his storied Yankees tenure that will be celebrated when he is officially enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame this July. The series will also touch upon his current role with the Marlins.

Randy Wilkins, an Emmy winner, is directing the film, and Spike Lee is credited as an executive producer. A tweet from the official MLB account said "The Captain," made in association with The Players’ Tribune and MLB, will be a six-part documentary.

"The documentary series will use Jeter’s journey as a vessel to tell a larger cultural story that explores race, family, community, rivalries and more," ESPN's Isabelle Lopez wrote in the official press release. "The heartbeat of the project is candid access to the man who helped restore shine to a team, a city, and a culture."
