Through the first few months of the 2025 MLB season, the New York Mets, despite going through a rough patch in most of June, have been one of the top teams. With a 48-34 record, not only do they have the best record in the NL East, but they have the third-best record in the NL.
New York has been solid this season, and a big reason for that is because of their success last year, when they made it to the NLCS for the first time since 2015.
Despite last season's success, the Mets chose to move on from a few key players. This includes a former MLB star, who recently received a contract offer despite retirement being considered.
Last year, the Mets relied heavily on players like Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, and Sean Manaea for their success. However, they also got solid play from plenty of other contributors, including DH J.D. Martinez.
Despite being nearly 38 years old and 14 seasons in the MLB under his belt, the six-time All-Star reportedly does not plan to retire yet, and he even has a contract offer from the Texas Rangers (h/t Jon Heyman of the New York Post).
"The struggling Rangers made a non-guaranteed offer to J.D. Martinez, who continues to work out in Miami in case the right deal comes along," Heyman wrote.
In his lone season with the Mets, Martinez recorded 16 home runs and 69 RBIs in 434 at-bats. However, New York chose not to bring the Miami native back.
As it stands, it remains unclear whether Martinez will sign with Texas. Until something becomes official, however, this will be a story worth following for Mets fans.
