'Felt Like I Was 50/50 Going in There;' Milwaukee Brewers DH Christian Yelich Provides Update After Leaving Game with Injury

For the first time since 2015, 10 years ago, the Milwaukee Brewers have swept the Philadelphia Phillies on the road. It is just the sixth time the Brewers have swept the Phillies in the history of their franchise. It was a great weekend of Brewers baseball overall, for obvious reasons.

DL Hall and Quinn Priester gave the bullpen a much-needed extra day of rest as they limited the Phillies, who had won 11 of 13 games heading into Friday, to runs while the offense plated six to take the series opener. Then, on Saturday, Milwaukee’s bats exploded for 17 runs, a season-high, saving the go-to relievers for an extra day.

On Sunday, the Brewers fell behind early, but were able to take advantage of Philadelphia’s woeful defense to plate three unearned runs in the seventh inning. But while fans were excited about the seventh consecutive victory, everyone was holding their breaths as they awaited news on Christian Yelich.

Milwaukee Brewers DH Christian Yelich Got Hit in the Hand Early in the Game

Yelich came up to the plate for the first and only time on Sunday with Jackson Chourio on first base at the top of the first inning. He reached base after being hit by a pitch, which caught him clean on his right hand. And while he remained in the game afterwards, by the time his spot came up in the batting order again, manager Pat Murphy had removed him.

Eric Haase was 0-2 at the plate filling in for Yelich. In the top of the seventh inning, with two runners on and the score tied with two outs, Murphy decided to pinch hit Jake Bauers for Haase as there was a right-hander on the mound.

It was a risky move. Taking Haase out meant that if William Contreras had gotten hurt, the team would have been without a catcher. But it was a move that paid off.

Bauers laced a two-RBI double down the right field line to give the Brewers a 4-2 advantage. They added an insurance run in the ninth to make the score 5-2, which would end up as the final result.

Milwaukee Brewers Star Christian Yelich Says His X-Rays Were Negative

Fortunately for the Brewers and their fans, Yelich did not suffer a broken hand as the result of the play. After the game, he told reporters that x-rays were negative, but that he was not sure that he would be so lucky going in:

“Yeah that was good news,” Yelich said of the negative x-rays on his hand. “Felt like I was 50/50 going in there, but it was really just a swelling thing and not being able to grip the bat.”

The 2018 NL MVP explained that he wanted to keep playing, but that his hand was in far too much pain for him to be able to grip the bat. As he notes, he is also experiencing some swelling.

The good news is that he will not require a stint on the injured list; the bad news, though, is that he will not be able to play until the swelling goes down.

Milwaukee travels to Cincinnati to take on the Reds tomorrow, and it will not be surprising if the three-time All-Star misses the first game or two of that series.
