Holliday, who retired in 2018, spent eight seasons with the Cardinals where he made four all star appearances and played a vital role on the 2011 World Series team. He was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2022. Since retiring, Holiday has spent time on his older brother’s staff at Oklahoma State as a volunteer assistant coach.
Another member of the Cardinals 2011 World Series team, Skip Schumaker also played eight seasons in St. Louis. He played with Holliday from 2009-2012 before spending a year with the Dodgers and finishing his career with two seasons in Cincinnati.
"I'm just so excited to learn from these guys, we are going to have the time of our lives," Schumaker said on Friday.
Schumaker spent the 2022 season as the Cardinals bench coach before being hired as manager of the Miami Marlins. After leading his team to the playoffs and winning NL Manager of the Year in 2023, he was let go by the Marlins following the 2024 season. He currently serves in the front office for the Texas Rangers as a senior advisor to the president of baseball operations.
While there is no indication what rosters will look like, the 20 teams for the tournament have been finalized, and the pools were announced earlier this week.
Looking to avenge their loss to Japan in the 2023 championship game, Team USA is in Pool B along with Mexico, Italy, Great Britain and Brazil. Their first round games will take place from March 6-11 at Daikin Park in Houston.
