Dexter Fowler may have only played two seasons for the Chicago Cubs, but he is still invested in the team. Fowler recently spoke to CBS Sports about the Cubs’ newest dynamic center fielder, Pete Crow-Armstrong:
“PCA is a staple piece right there, he’s a star in the making,” Fowler said. “I love the way he plays outfield. I’ve talked to him a bunch, his mindset is there. He wants to have fun, he wants to win, and he’s perfectly set to be a Cubbie. He’s the type of dude you want out there.”
If anyone knows what it takes to succeed in center at Wrigley Field, it’s Fowler. The 14-year veteran joined Chicago in 2015 before making his lone all-star appearance during that magical 2016 run. Much like Crow-Armstrong, Fowler took pride in the defensive portion of the game and often showed off his range and athleticism at the eight.
But now it’s Crow-Armstrong’s time.
After a mixed bag rookie campaign, he is blossoming into one of the most electrifying players in all of baseball. His defense and speed remain elite, but it is his production at the plate that has heads turning.
Crow-Armstrong has a .290 batting average, a .909 OPS, and a 153 OPS+ with 12 home runs (already surpassing his 10 total from 2024) and 38 RBIs. He also has 14 stolen bases on 17 attempts.
If there is a knock on Crow-Armstrong’s game, which now features a legitimate five-tool skillset, it is his plate discipline. He has struggled with whiffs and chasing pitches, and has a 47:9 K:BB ratio so far.
However, this is a small price to pay considering his National League-leading 3.1 WAR. That figure trails only Aaron Judge (3.7) in the Majors. Kyle Tucker is still the face of the Cubs, but with an uncertain future, Crow-Armstrong may need to step into those shoes.
Fortunately for Chicago, their 23-year-old looks more than ready to handle that load.
