Former Detroit Tigers Reliever Joins Los Angeles Angels Bullpen on One-Year Deal
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels continued adding to their bullpen on Saturday, signing right-handed reliever Jose Cisnero to a one-year deal.

Per Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com:

Cisnero gets $1.75M. INF Livan Soto DFA’d

It's another add for the Angels, who have been active in free agency despite losing Shohei Ohtani to the cross-town Dodgers. The Halos have now brought in outfielder Aaron Hicks and relievers Adam Cimber, Robert Stephenson and Matt Moore, in addition to Cisnero, and they've traded for former top prospect Evan White.

Cisnero is a 34-year-old native of the Dominican Republic. He's pitched in seven big league seasons with the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers. He's got an interesting career arc, as he pitched with Houston in 2013-2014 but then didn't resurface in the big leagues until 2019.

He struggled in 2023, going 3-4 with a 5.31 ERA, but he had been a reliable bullpen arm prior to that. He had a 1.08 ERA in 2022, a 3.65 in 2021 (67 appearances), a 3.03 in 2020 (29 games in shortened season) and a 4.33 in 2019.

He'll pair in the bullpen with Moore and closer Carlos Estevez, as well as Stephenson.

Los Angeles finished fourth in the American League West last season and after losing Ohtani, they are expected to finish similarly in 2024. However, with the upgrades they've made, if they can stay healthy, they just may be able to surprise some people under first-year manager Ron Washington.

Spring training begins in less than two weeks and spring training games start in about three.
