LOS ANGELES – The Arizona Diamondbacks originally drafted Max Scherzer 11th overall in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft, and 19 years later, he is still going strong in the big leagues. Scherzer had a decent outing in the biggest stage of them all, though couldn’t help get the win in Game 3 of the 2025 World Series after an incredible 18 innings.
Scherzer gave up a solo shot home run to Teoscar Hernandez in the bottom of the second, and another solo homer to Shohei Ohtani in the top of the third inning, though kept things relatively calm besides that. Scherzer was pulled after only pitching 4.1 innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs along with three strikeouts. Scherzer’s impact only meant so much though after the game lasted 18 innings and was tied for the longest game in World Series history,
The Diamondbacks ended up promoting Max Scherzer back in April of 2008, and had a decent though up-and-down season during the 2009 year for Arizona, and ended up with a 9-11 record and a 4.12 ERA in 30 games pitched. Scherzer was traded in December of 2009 in a package that sent Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy to Arizona in a three-team deal.
What would Max Scherzer’s career look like if he had never been traded? Is it possible that he could have stayed his entire career in Sedona red? One of the most stable and hard-working starting pitchers in the league, Scherzer has posted a career ERA of 3.22 with a career record so far of 221-117 with almost 3500 strikeouts. The career trajectory for Scherzer definitely could have helped Arizona during their playoff runs in 2011, 2017, and 2023.
