It has been a little over five years since the Arizona Diamondbacks traded their #1 overall prospect, Jazz Chisholm Jr., to the Miami Marlins. In return, the Diamondbacks acquired a now household name in Arizona, Zac Gallen.
At the time of the trade, Chisholm had not yet made his Major League debut. As the Diamondbacks’ 2018 Minor League Player of the Year, he still had 1-2 more years of development ahead of him. Conversely, Zac Gallen had already made his mark with the Marlins, making him an attractive arm for Arizona to secure.
Prior to the first time Chisholm was set to face Gallen since the trade, he told reporters that he was ready to hit a home run off him. Instead, he went 0-3 against Gallen. Postgame, Gallen spoke about the at-bats: “I gave him 97, and said, here see what you can do about it… not much.” For a moment, it seemed as if a rivalry was brewing between the two. But, throughout his career, Chisholm has gone 0-12 with five strikeouts against Gallen.
Last season Jazz Chisholm said he wanted to hit a homer off Zac Gallen, who he was traded for.

In his rookie season in 2021, Chisholm posted a .248 batting average with Miami. He then attended his first All-Star game a year later, finishing the season with an impressive .860 OPS. He was named the cover athlete for MLB The Show 23 and seemed well on his way to becoming one of the faces of the league.
However, the journey has not been smooth for the 26-year-old since then. Injuries have played a significant role, as he missed 40 games last season with a toe injury. Overall, he has yet to make a major step since his All-Star season in 2022. So far this year, he is hitting .256, including 12 doubles and 11 home runs, amidst a Marlins team that holds one of the worst records in baseball.
As a result, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, “there is a growing belief Chisholm will be traded” by the end of the month. Potential targets for Chisholm include the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Craig Mish also noted, “Believe it or not this is the first time there has been genuine interest in Chisholm as injuries, and his personality have kept other clubs wondering what they would be getting in return.”
With trade rumors circulating, Chisholm hit a leadoff home run against the Houston Astros on Wednesday.
