Former MLB relief pitcher Octavio Dotel has tragically passed away in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, after Jet Set nightclub’s roof collapsed, according to multiple sources and Diario Libre.

Dotel had been rescued from the rubble after over 11 hours, but died at the Armed Forces Hospital.

The Dominican newspaper also reported that 44 others have died, with at least 146 more injured. Among the deceased is former MLB slugger Nelson Cruz’s sister, Nelsy, who was the governor of the Montecristi province.

Jet Set was hosting a performance by merengue singer, Rubby Pérez, during the accident.

The harrowing news has shaken MLB and Dominican communities and is a disturbing reminder of life’s unexpectedness. Dotel, who was still just 51 years old, played for 13 different teams over 15 seasons, namely for the Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Oakland Athletics.

His sudden death is sure to affect each clubhouse.

MLB reporter Mike Rodriguez, a Dominican Republic native, had this to add on Dotel:

“A great human being and lovely person, much strength to his family. We, your friends, will miss you very much,” Rodriguez said.

Expect Dotel's former teammates and fellow Dominican-born players to show their support and love for him and his family in the coming days.

Dotel, a 2011 World Series Champion with the St. Louis Cardinals, appeared in 19 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010. Over 758 career games and 951 innings, Dotel accumulated a 3.78 ERA. He also had an incredible 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings for his career.

Rest in peace to Dotel, Nelsy Cruz, and the rest of the victims of this devastating incident. Their families are in our thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.
