Former Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasiel Puig placed 899 sports bets through an illegal gambling business in the summer of 2019, a Department of Justice release states.

Per the release, Puig "agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge for lying to federal law enforcement officials about bets on sports events that he placed with an illegal gambling operation."
The report states Puig started placing bets in May 2019 and by the next month had already amassed gambling debts totaling $282,900. It was during a span from July 4 to Sept. 29, 2019 that Puig placed the staggering 899 bets.
His plea agreement puts the final nail in the coffin of his MLB career.

Puig took the baseball world by storm when he burst onto the scene in 2013 with the Dodgers. He played in 104 games, hitting 19 home runs and recording a career-best .319 batting average. In six seasons in Los Angeles, Puig had a batting average of .279 and hit 108 home runs. He made the All-Star Game in 2014.
In 2019, Puig played for both the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians.
Per the DOJ release, Puig agreed to a fine "of at least $55K" and will make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court on Nov. 15. The charge of making false statements "carries a statutory maximum of five years in federal prison."
