Former Cleveland Guardians outfielder Oscar González resurfaced in the news on May 19-20.

On May 19, it became apparent that the San Diego Padres would be granting González's release so that he could pursue a career in Japan.

"The 27-year-old outfielder has been placed on unconditional release waivers to allow him to pursue an opportunity in Japan, the Union-Tribune confirmed," relayed San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Jeff Sanders.

Baseball reporter Francys Romero then reported that "Dominican outfielder Oscar González is in an agreement with the Rakuten Eagles, per sources."

"Despite a strong 2022 season in MLB, he wasn't able to secure a long-term role and will now look to continue his career in Japan," Romero explained. Noting that González is represented by The MAS+ Agency.

MLB insider Jon Heyman later confirmed the financial details behind this move overseas on May 20, reporting: "Oscar González, OF, signed a deal through 2026 for about $2M with Rakuten in Japan."

González's best MLB campaign came with the Guardians in 2022, at age 24.

The outfielder slugged 12 home runs that year, including the playoffs, while also driving in 47 total RBI. He contributed a +2.2 WAR throughout that 91-appearance regular season in Cleveland, not to mention his 7 postseason outings.

González batted an impressive .296 that season, with an OPS of .789, but those averages regressed to .214 and .551 in 2023, respectively.

After a lost season in 2024, González held a .220 batting average over 21 games with the Padres in 2025. He knocked in 4 RBI for San Diego, with an OPS of .483 and a WAR of -0.5.
