The LSU Tigers former pitching coach, Wes Johnson, has signed an extension with the Georgia Bulldogs which will keep him in Athens through the 2031 season.
Johnson was viewed as one of the best pitching coaches in the country, so Jay Johnson, LSU's current head coach, brought him in prior to the 2023 season to help develop his pitchers. In just one season, he helped guys like Paul Skenes and Ty Floyd turn into stars and won a national championship with the Tigers before he was offered the head coaching job at Georgia, which he accepted.
Since Mississippi State fired their head coach a few weeks back, there has been a ton of speculation on who will become the next coach of the Bulldogs. One of the top names on that list was Wes Johnson, so Georgia made sure to lock him down before he had any chance of jumping ship. Johnson had previously coached for Mississippi State, so there were already some ties to the program.
Johnson has done a tremendous job at Georgia, leading them to a 43-17 record in 2024 and a top-eight national seed before going 42-15 this season and having the Bulldogs ranked 10th heading into the SEC Tournament. If they can win a few games, they might be able to secure another top-eight seed and host a super regional for the second consecutive season.
Details on Johnson's contract haven't been released yet, but Jay Johnson has a seven-year, 12.5-million dollar deal, so I would expect that Wes's is probably a little less than that.
