Former Mets' Top Prospect Traded to NL East Rival
Stephen Brashear-USA TODAY Sports

This move could potentially wreak havoc on the New York Mets for many years to come.

On Sunday night, the Seattle Mariners traded former Mets' top prospect Jarred Kelenic to the Atlanta Braves for Marco Gonzales and Evan White. Seattle also received Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar in the deal.

Last season, Kelenic hit .253 with a .746 OPS, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. However, he missed two months of action after fracturing his foot after kicking a water cooler.

The Mets drafted Kelenic with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. They later traded the star prospect that December in a mega deal that brought closer Edwin Diaz and second baseman Robinson Cano to Queens.

Kelenic has yet to develop into the star player he was projected to be, but he is still just 24-years-old.

The Braves have an excellent player development system, and have a knack for getting the most out of their players, so Atlanta could be the perfect fit for Kelenic.

At this point, the Mets have won the December 2018 trade facilitated by ex-GM Brodie Van Wagenen given Diaz is the best closer in the game. But there is still a chance that Kelenic can bud into a star now that he is with the Braves.
