Back in 2021, the Milwaukee Brewers sent an astounding five players to the All-Star Game. While none were voted in as starters, the players that were selected were not all that surprising, especially considering that four of them were among the National League’s best pitchers.
These hurlers, of course, were Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes, and Josh Hader. Forming one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, these star players helped lead the Brewers to 95 wins and the National League Central Division crown.
But the fifth All-Star, catcher Omar Narvaez, is often forgotten when discussing Milwaukee’s recent run of regular season success.
Narvaez was originally acquired by the Brewers in December of 2019 in a trade for minor league prospect Adam Hill. He appeared in 40 games in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, hitting just .176/.294/.269 with two home runs and 10 RBI. It was a very disappointing season for the catcher, who had hit .278/.353/.460 with 22 home runs and 55 RBI the season prior in Seattle.
But 2021 was a much better year and showed why Milwaukee had been interested in him in the first place. As mentioned, he made the NL All-Star team that season, hitting .266/.342/.402 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI in 123 games.
2022, though, saw Narvaez take a step back. He played just 84 games and hit .206/.292/.305 with four home runs and 23 RBI. He hit free agency after the season, and the Brewers decided to acquire William Contreras to be their catcher and let Narvaez walk.
After leaving Milwaukee, Narvaez spent two seasons with the New York Mets. Unfortunately for him, he did not rediscover the consistent hitting that he had showcased in 2019 in Seattle and 2021 with the Brewers. He hit just .211/.283/.297 with two home runs and seven RBI in 49 games in 2023, and .154/.191/.185 with no home runs and five RBI in 23 games in 2024.
New York released him in June of 2024 and he spent the rest of the season with the Houston Astros minor league affiliates.
Narvaez signed with the Chicago White Sox this season, but was released again despite hitting .286/.400/.286 in four Major League games.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Narvaez has returned to the Astros on a minor league deal.
