Earlier this year, former Milwaukee Brewers utility player Vinny Capra used a strong showing in Spring Training to make his first career Opening Day roster. Unfortunately, his .292/.358/.729 batting line this spring did not translate to success in the Majors.
After hitting a home run against the New York Yankees on Opening Weekend, Capra struggled mightily at the plate. He ended up hitting just .074/.121/.134 with a home run and four RBI in 24 games for Milwaukee, getting just three hits after that home run. He was designated for assignment by the team earlier this year.
After being designated for assignment by Milwaukee, Capra went unclaimed and elected free agency instead of accepting a role in Triple-A Nashville. He was subsequently signed by the Chicago White Sox, one of the worst teams in the Majors.
Unfortunately for Capra, a change of scenery did little to improve his offense. In 23 games with the White Sox, he hit .190/.205/.238 with two RBI.
Earlier this week, he made headlines by being the batter who struck out against Los Angeles Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw, earning the two-time World Series champ his 3,000th career strikeout. Kershaw is just the 20th pitcher all time to reach that mark, and just the fourth left-handed pitcher ever to do it, joining former Brewers pitcher CC Sabathia in that exclusive club.
On July 4, just a couple of days after becoming Kershaw’s 3000th career strikeout victim, Capra was designated for assignment again:

As he is out of minor league options, Capra can elect free agency again instead of accepting a trip to the minors in the White Sox organization.
That being said, a career .133/.181/.188 hitter in the Majors, it is hard to see Capra getting another opportunity in the Majors, at least this year.
However, he may follow in the footsteps of another former Brewers player, Rowdy Tellez, who signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers after being designated by the Seattle Mariners this past week. Capra may decide another change of scenery, and a better organization, would be a more ideal place to find his footing than Chicago.
