After a shaky start to open the regular season, the Atlanta Braves suddenly find themselves as one of the hottest teams in baseball.
Currently sitting in a tie for dead last in the NL East with an overall record of 9-13, it’s no secret that the Braves are not where they want to be. Despite the recent success, another slide similar to the one we saw in early April could prove to be fatal, as Atlanta will need to keep pace with both New York and Philadelphia for any chance at a division title.
If the Braves continue to lose games on a consistent basis, there will be many questions looking to be answered as to what direction the team may go in. With many names and rumors circulating around the trade market, the Braves may find themselves in unfamiliar territory- trading elite and key pieces on expiring contracts away for young prospects.
One player that may be one of the first to be shipped out of Atlanta is Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna, who is currently in the final year of a 5 year deal, is an elite bat that would be a major addition to any team fighting for a playoff spot or lacking DH production. With multiple future commitments already on the books, Atlanta has made it clear that a new deal with Ozuna is not a guarantee. Currently making $16 million in the final year of his contract, Ozuna will almost certainly be receiving a major pay day in free agency.
If the Braves continue to struggle and as the trade deadline slowly grows closer, trading a star caliber player like Ozuna becomes more and more of a reality.
