Former Phillies Relievers' Recent Outings Cause Orioles Analyst to Call Out GM

At the 2024 MLB trade deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies made two trades with the Baltimore Orioles. The first had the Phillies sending reliever Seranthony Dominguez for outfielder Austin Hays. The second, right before the deadline, had the Phillies sending Gregory Soto for Seth Johnson and Moises Chace.

While the Phillies came out decently well, with Johnson and Chace proving to be solid acquisitions. But the Orioles have had mixed results. In 2024, Dominguez had a turnaround and pitched fairly well for Baltimore with a 3.97 ERA.

However, the outings of Soto and Dominguez against the Boston Red Sox caused Jason La Canfora, radio and TV analyst covering the Orioles, to call out Orioles general manager Mike Elias on Twitter/X.

Canfora said, "#FireElias. They were utterly (expletive), preposterous trades in realtime as called repeatedly in realtime @IA1057TheFan. Silly trades from an [unserious] front office that is utterly clueless and can never fix the mess they created."

His tirade was sparked by Dominguez giving up 3 earned runs, and Soto giving up 2 earned runs in a game against the Red Sox. Following their blow-up outings, Dominguez shot his ERA up to 6.06, while Soto's ERA rose to 4.67.

Both relievers were acquired from the Phillies at the same trade deadline, and neither move has worked for the Orioles. Regardless of whether the players the Phillies received have contributed or not, the Orioles return hasn't made the moves worth it.

From the Phillies perspective, the acquisition of Hays was a massive disappointment. With the Phillies, Hays hit just .256 with an OPS of .672. He accumulated negative 0.3 WAR, and wasn't a contributor like the Phillies had hoped he would be.

But the real damage for the Orioles comes in is the Phillies getting Chace and Johnson. Across Chace's six games in 2025 before being placed on the injured list, he had a 3.24 ERA in 16.2 innings.

Johnson meanwhile has a 4.65 ERA in 31 innings in 2025. But, back in 2024, Johnson impressed with the Phillies. In double-A, Johnson had a 3.52 ERA, and once he reached Triple-A, Johnson had a 2.74 ERA.

While the return for the Phillies hasn't made a huge impact, the Orioles relievers have struggled with their new team. The two trades, combined with the Orioles poor start, led Canfora to call out Elias in a social media tirade.
