Former Phillies Top Prospect Traded to Yankees at Deadline
USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers have traded former Philadelphia Phillies top prospect Spencer Howard to the New York Yankees.

Howard was moved to the Rangers in 2021 in part of the package that sent Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Hans Crouse to the Phillies.

Since then, Howard has made few appearances at the Major League level for Texas and has floundered mightily both in the Majors and it Triple-A.

Howard is nothing more than a lottery ticket at this point as he holds a career 7.20 ERA in the Majors and owns a 5.40 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched at the Triple-A level this season.

In return the Yankees are sending cash considerations.

It's been a quick and sharp fall for the once former highly coveted pitching prospect. Now New York will get their chance to try and fix Howard. He could end up becoming a bullpen piece, but it's still a far cry from the elite starter he was once projected to be.

In the end, it appears that Philadelphia were the "winners" of that particular trade with the Rangers as Kyle Gibson helped pitch the Phillies into a World Series in 2022.
