Former Pirates Star Linked to Young Cardinals’ Roster

It was a main priority for the St. Louis Cardinals to make the roster younger in 2026. Through a flurry of moves, they have achieved that goal. The youth movement has been accepted well by Cardinals fans. Many believe this franchise shift should have taken place a few years back. So far this offseason, the Cardinals have stayed away from many veteran free agents. However, they have been linked to many veteran, right-handed-hitting outfielders. The latest link is a former National League MVP in 2013. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested on his podcast, Fair Territory, on Monday that former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen could be a possibility for the Cardinals in 2026.

Andrew McCutchen Linked to Young Cardinals’ Roster

The Old Bull

If the Cardinals were to add McCutchen, he would definitely be the “wily veteran” of the team. He has spent 17 seasons in the major leagues.  Cutch has spent most of his time with the Pirates but has also played for the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers. He has a career .271 average, .365 OBP, .457 slugging, and a .822 OPS. McCutchen also has 332 homers and 1,152 RBI over his 17-year career. He has a career WAR of 49.0, which ranks 337th all-time.

Possible Role

Despite Rosenthal’s speculation, it is hard to imagine McCutchen suiting up for the Cardinals in 2026. However, it would be nice to see him playing with the Cards rather than against them, even if it is at this late point in his career. McCutchen’s role would consist of platoon service with the Cardinals. The organization has an abundance of young and talented outfielders whom they want to give a chance at the major league level. However, with the timetable for Lars Nootbaar‘s recovery still unclear, they won’t want to rush anyone into that spot. That is where a guy like McCutchen could help the Cards.

McCutchen is someone more than capable of stepping into that role and being ready to perform come Opening Day. He would also be a good fit to split time with Nootbaar, when he returns, when facing lefties. Cutch has hit .290 in his career against left-handed pitching.

Does It Make Sense?

There are a lot of questions that would surround this move. Does McCutchen even want to play in 2026? All indications are that he does plan to play in 2026, but obviously doesn’t have a destination yet. He would have been more than willing to return to Pittsburgh, but after the Pirates signed veteran Marcell Ozuna, chances of a reunion appear put to bed.

McCutchen ultimately signing with the Cardinals goes against what the team had planned. He turns 40 in October, and that definitely goes against the grain when it comes to a youth movement. However, having a guy like McCutchen in the clubhouse wouldn’t be a bad thing either. He would for sure provide the veteran leadership the Cardinals lack heading into the 2026 season.

It obviously wouldn’t be more than a one-year deal, either. McCutchen also wouldn’t be blocking anyone from playing time if he were to come to St. Louis. It is a buy-low situation for the Cardinals at this point. It would also be fun to see a potential future Hall of Famer from a divisional rival play for the Birds on the Bat.
