The Boston Red Sox released veteran reliever Adam Ottavino a little over a month after they brought him in on a Minor League deal. Ottavino was a free agent for nine days before he found a new home in an old team.
According to MLB Trade Rumors.com , the New York Yankees signed Ottavino to a Major League contract. Ottavino joins the Red Sox division rival a little over a week since his release.
Ottavino had a tough Spring Training with the Red Sox, finishing with a 10.80 ERA in five innings pitched. He did have eight strikeouts but allowed six earned runs on five hits and five walks.
Ottavino played for the Red Sox in 2021 after two years with the Yankees. In 2022, Ottavino joined the New York Mets, where he played the last three seasons. His 2024 saw him finish with a 4.34 ERA in 56 innings pitched.
The Yankees added the 39-year-old onto the Major League roster since All-Star reliever Devin Williams was placed on the paternity list. Back in New York and with the Yankees, Ottavino will play in his 15th season in his Major League career.
Across his 14-year career heading into 2025, Ottavino has thrown 743 innings. In those innings, Ottavino has struck out 859 batters, allowed a 3.49 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP, and has 41 wins to 43 losses.
The Red Sox don't play the Yankees until June sixth in New York. With Williams absence likely not being for long, Ottavino may not face off against the team that released him shortly before Opening Day.
