Richards, 31, has made his way around the league in his seven year career. He spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers and Twins. Richards pitched to a 4.55 ERA in 65 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays and Twins last season.
Richards is a pitcher who has contributed as a starter and reliever. While his number of starts in a season has fluctuated throughout his career, his time in the bullpen has been effective, especially during his time with Tampa Bay and Toronto.
In 2021, Richards had a solid strikeout rate of 10.9 per 9 innings, an excellent WHIP of 0.964, and a respectable ERA of 3.50. These strong stats were matched during his 2023 campaign when Richards averaged 13 strikeouts per 9 innings and a 1.346 WHIP. Even though Richards’ ERA in 2023 was slightly higher at 4.95, his 4.22 FIP suggests he was more effective than his ERA indicates.
Having stints as a starter and out of the bullpen, Richards has demonstrated adaptability throughout his career. In 2018, at the beginning of his career, Richards started 25 games. In subsequent years, specifically 2022-2024, he has become a spot starter when needed, spending most of his time in the bullpen as a long reliever.
The Cubs have worked to improve their bullpen this offseason. Chicago has signed Caleb Thielbar and acquired Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians. Richards is set to bring his experience and expertise to the Cubs. Spring training provides Richards the opportunity to showcase his value and abilities to a secure a roster spot on the Cubs roster.
