Former Yankees Utilityman Signs Deal With Athletics
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

As the New York Yankees begin to navigate a crucial offseason, they have been connected to many of the top players available in free agency like they always are.

A disastrous season in 2023 has the organization feeling like they need to make a major splash before next year to upgrade their roster.

Many of the players once viewed as solutions for the Yankees have moved on to other locations over the years.

That's the case with their former utilityman Miguel Andujar, who was once seen as a promising piece for the franchise.

New York initially signed Andujar as an international free agent in 2011. He spent six years in their minor league system before making his MLB debut in 2017, appearing in five games.

He was heavily featured in 2018, playing 149 games and recording a slash line of .297/.328/.527 with 27 home runs and 92 RBI.

His promising career was put on hold after a shoulder injury forced him to get surgery and limited him to only 12 games in 2019. That began a string of injuries for the former young star that saw him play 93 games over the next three years with the Yankees.

Andujar was sent to Triple-A in the summer of 2022, prompting him to request a trade. That wish was not met and he was eventually called back up in August, before being optioned to their minor league team once again.

After being designated for assignment in late September of 2022, his tenure in New York ended after he was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It was much of the same for the utilityman with the Pirates as he ping-ponged back-and-forth between the MLB roster and their Triple-A affiliate during 2023.

Following the season, Andujar was claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics and signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal for 2024 as reported by Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

The 28-year-old will look to regain his previous form in a much less pressure filled environment than what he experienced with the Yankees.
