Four FA Relievers Names to Watch for Cubs
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs' offseason has been quiet outside of the Shota Imanaga signing. While there have been some disappointing times this offseason, it doesn't seem to be the effort that's the problem.

President of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, has moves that he'd like to make before Spring Training.

For Hoyer, his biggest priority is adding relievers. According to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, Robert Stephenson, Phil Maton, David Robertson, and Ryne Stanek are all names to watch for the Cubs. The idea would be to pair these potential arms with Adbert Alzolay and Julian Merryweather.

Hoyer was also on record saying he's offered relievers this offseason.

Arguably the best available closer in baseball, Josh Hader, was available throughout the winter, but nothing was done by Chicago before he signed a deal with an American League powerhouse.

Emmanuel Clase is also available, but they'd have to trade prospects to acquire him. He's a possibility, although unlikely given his probable asking price.

The Cubs want to be one of the top teams in the National League Central in 2024 and there's a real possibility they can do that.

However, the bullpen will need to be better.

No matter what Hoyer does in the remainder of the offseason, if the bullpen isn't addressed, Chicago will lose games that they shouldn't lose. This was the case in 2023 when their overtaxed relief dropped games late in the year that cost them a playoff berth.

Stanek, Stephenson, Maton, and Robertson would be impressive additions. Bringing in any two of those veteran relievers can help shape this Cubs bullpen into a respectable one.
