As the Toronto Blue Jays look to build for next season and beyond, several young talents are emerging as potential leaders for the team in 2025. Here are four promising players who could play significant roles in the Blue Jays' success in the coming years.
At 26 years old, Spencer Horwitz is carving out a promising career with the Blue Jays. After appearing in just 15 games last season, Horwitz was called up in June for a full-time role this year. In 45 games, he has posted a solid .276/.367/.414 slash line with four home runs, 16 RBI and an impressive 19:29 BB ratio.
Horwitz embodies the qualities the Blue Jays value: a patient approach at the plate and consistent performance. Although his sample size is relatively small, his success batting at the top of the order bodes well for his potential to contribute significantly next season.
Joey Loperfido, 25, joined the Blue Jays as part of the Astros' package for Yusei Kikuchi. Loperfido was highly regarded entering the season, ranking as Houston's No. 6 prospect before shedding his prospect status. He continued to impress in Triple-A this year, with 13 home runs and a .933 OPS over 39 games.
Although he has faced challenges during his brief time in the majors, Loperfido's versatility — playing both corner outfield spots and first base — positions him well for increased playing time. He will be a strong contender for an outfield spot in 2025.
Ranked as Toronto’s No. 2 prospect by MLB.com, 22-year-old Orelvis Martinez is known for his power potential. He has maintained a career OPS of .833 in the minor leagues, highlighting his ability to make a significant impact at the plate.
Despite getting suspended for 80 games right after being called up earlier this season, the Blue Jays remain optimistic about his future. The organization hopes Martinez will fulfill his potential next year, providing a potent offensive boost to the team.
After being traded to the Blue Jays for Yimi Garcia, Jonatan Clase has secured the No. 8 spot on the team's top-30 prospect list. The 22-year-old has spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he has excelled with a .274/.373/.483 slash line.
Although he struggled during his brief stint in the majors, Clase's speed is a standout attribute — he stole 79 bases in 2023 and has 29 so far in 2024. With his speed and defensive prowess, Clase has the potential to become an elite defender and a valuable asset in the Blue Jays' lineup.
