Francisco Alvarez's blast ignites Mets rout of Phillies

Francisco Alvarez had two hits Saturday, including the go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth, as the host New York Mets routed the skidding Philadelphia Phillies 10-3.

Carson Benge was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBIs for the Mets (71-84), who have won the middle two games of the four-game series. Brett Baty had two hits, including a run-scoring single, while Benge, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette each had RBI singles during a four-run eighth.

Ronny Mauricio and Francisco Lindor worked bases-loaded walks.

Jefry Yan (2-1), the first of five Mets relievers, earned the win by allowing two hits over 1 1/3 innings. Cionel Perez, Jonathan Pintaro, Dedniel Nunez and Tobias Myers combined to blank the Phillies on one hit over the final three innings.

Mets starter Christian Scott allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven over 4 2/3 innings.

Alec Bohm had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth for the Phillies (85-70), who missed a chance to take over the top National League wild card -- at least temporarily . The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, who also began Saturday at 85-69, were scheduled to play the Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins later.

Bryce Harper had a double and sacrifice fly while Trea Turner and Luis Arraez added two hits apiece for the Phillies, who fell to 7-10 in September.

Andrew Painter (3-10) took the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings.

Benge homered leading off the second. Bohm tied the score in the fourth before the Phillies chased Scott in the fifth when Harper lofted a tie-breaking sacrifice fly before Bohm's RBI single to left off Yan.

The Mets took the lead in a 10-pitch span against Painter leading off the bottom of the inning. Marcus Semien drew a four-pitch walk and Baty singled before Alvarez hit a 387-foot opposite field homer to right.

Mauricio drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, as did Lindor in the eighth before the consecutive RBI singles by Soto, Bichette and Benge.
