New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu changed his offseason approach to avoid his frequent injured list trips.
Unfortunately for LeMahieu, his body isn’t taking to the new routine.
LeMahieu left Saturday’s win over the Houston Astros with a lower calf injury. The three-time All-Star told reporters Sunday he hadn’t yet gotten an MRI.
After suffering yet another injury, LeMahieu said he immediately thought, “Is this a sick joke?’”
“It’s probably gonna be a little bit before I start doing baseball stuff again,” LeMahieu added, according to the New York Post.
It is unclear if LeMahieu will need an injured list stint. The Yankees open the regular season March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Even before his injury, LeMahieu wasn’t guaranteed a spot in the Yankees’ starting lineup. LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza are competing for the third base job.
Once a fan favorite for his clutch hits and overall versatility, LeMahieu has become a liability in the Yankees’ lineup. The two-time batting champion has hit just .252 since the start of 2021.

Foot injuries limited LeMahieu to a career-low .204 average in 67 games. He tallied a -1.6 bWAR and missed the Yankees’ playoff run.
LeMahieu told reporters earlier in spring training that he took a two-month break from hitting during the offseason.
Unfortunately for LeMahieu, his latest injury may keep him away from a bat yet again.
“I wanted to come in here this spring and prove I’m healthy,” LeMahieu said. “I’m not off to the hottest start with that.”
