Garrett Crochet Weighs in on Postseason Availability

The Boston Red Sox are now just one day away from the long-awaited Wild Card rematch against the New York Yankees, but the team is still mulling over one major decision.

According to manager Chad Tracy, rehabbing lefty Garrett Crochet’s status for the series is “up in the air,” indicating that he and the Red Sox brass are still weighing the options of activating him to join the postseason roster. Crochet, who has been on the injured list since April, has progressed well over the past few weeks, throwing several live bullpen sessions. He traveled with the team to New York but has yet to appear in a game in the minors or majors since April 25.

The decision to activate Crochet is a complicated one. Having a tested postseason arm with experience as a Game 1 starter at Yankee Stadium is a huge boost in any role. But the questions of his health and whether it is wise for his first appearance in over five months to come in a playoff atmosphere still loom large.

The 27-year-old Crochet had set his sights on a postseason return earlier in the month, explaining that he would feel comfortable doing so without any rehab games because he has “done crazy things before.” Now toward the conclusion of this throwing progression, he is tracking to do just that. The decision, Crochet says, is now out of his hands.

“I’ve been feeling good, I guess now it’s just a matter if anyone agrees with me,” Crochet said with a smile on Monday in the Bronx.

“I’ve been busting my tail just to give myself a fighting chance, and I feel like I did that. Now it’s just waiting for the roster to come out.”

The Red Sox will announce their round 1 postseason roster on Tuesday morning, with Crochet’s potential inclusion taking center stage. While Tracy did not divulge much about the process, the need for an additional leverage reliever has increased over the weekend with the injury to Tyron Guerrero and the uninspiring performance from Tanner Houck.

In what could very possibly be a low-scoring series, Boston’s ability to get the ball from their starters to Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman will be one of the most important keys to the series. With Guerrero out of the picture and Erik Miller coming off of a shaky September, Crochet could be that guy.
