The Toronto Blue Jays have had a busy MLB offseason, looking like winners early on heading into 2026. They have capitalized on their momentum following a trip to the World Series, emerging in free agency as a destination for some of the best available talent.

Most notably, they addressed their biggest need on the pitching side. Toronto signed right-handed starter Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract, immediately slotting him at the top of the rotation.

They also filled out the back end by signing reclamation project Cody Ponce to a three-year, $30 million deal after his stint in the Korean Baseball Organization, while bringing back veteran Shane Bieber. Together, those moves have created one of the deepest rotations in the league.

Next on the agenda for the Blue Jays was strengthening the bullpen, and they did just that during the Rule 5 MLB Draft. The Rule 5 Draft is designed to give opportunities to minor league players who are not protected on their team’s 40-man roster, allowing other clubs to select them and give players a chance to reach the majors.

Toronto used the draft to add right-handed pitcher Spencer Miles from the San Francisco Giants organization. The Blue Jays announced the move on Wednesday.

“OFFICIAL: We’ve selected RHP Spencer Miles from the Giants in the MLB phase of the Rule 5 Draft. Welcome to our #BlueJays family!” the team wrote on X.

Blue Jays assistant general manager Mike Murov noted that Miles will get his first look as a reliever, praising his sinker against right-handed hitters and his ability to control the zone, according to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.

A fourth-round pick by the Giants in the 2022 MLB Draft, Miles has battled durability concerns throughout his young career. He has already undergone two major surgeries, including Tommy John surgery in 2024 and a back procedure earlier in his development.

The Blue Jays are betting on his upside, hoping he can stay healthy and contribute to their bullpen. Encouragingly, Miles returned to action in the 2025 Arizona Fall League, making five appearances and posting a 4.15 ERA over 8.2 innings while striking out 12 batters.

With a reinforced rotation and added bullpen depth, the Blue Jays enter 2026 positioned to contend again.
