Giants losing out on Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa 'sucked'

San Francisco Giants Opening Day starting pitcher Logan Webb is excited for the start of the season but also knows his team missed out on two major acquisitions. 

"It sucked we didn’t get Aaron Judge or Carlos Correa, but at the end of the day, we weren’t too far away from being a really good team last year," Webb admitted to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (h/t NJ Advance Media for NJ.com). "There were just little things that we had to clean up, and then you bring in guys that are really good baseball players." 

Webb, of course, will face Judge at the New York Yankees on Thursday after the reigning American League Most Valuable Player re-signed with the Bronx Bombers on a nine-year, $360M agreement this past offseason. The All-Star slugger grew up a Giants fan as a native of Linden, California, and flirted with joining San Francisco as a free agent before he returned to where he felt he belonged. 

As for Correa, the Giants agreed to a 13-year, $350M contract with the All-Star shortstop before they scrapped the deal after their doctors flagged a medical concern in a physical. Correa ultimately re-signed with the Minnesota Twins. 

"We had a slight glimmer of hope with [Judge] this offseason," fellow Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb told Slusser. 

Cobb added about pitching to Judge rather than having him as a teammate this weekend: "To me, Aaron Judge is the Yankees' captain, so I don’t have much thought other than trying to get him out." 

Meanwhile, Judge sounds eager to take on his beloved childhood club to begin what many feel is a "World Series or bust" campaign for the Yankees. 

"I think I saw [the 2023 schedule] middle of the year last year and I was kind of like, 'Someone's messing with me on the MLB side,'" Judge said, per ESPN. "I grew up as a kid watching the Giants. ... Getting a chance [to have my] first Opening Day as captain, and getting a chance to play against a great organization like that, we're going to have some fun."

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi recently pointed out that Judge's snub could serve as "a little extra motivation for us," particularly during the season's first series. The Giants certainly would "have some fun" by taking at least two of three at Yankee Stadium by Sunday night.
