Giants Make Announcement on Long-Time First Baseman After Early Season Struggles
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

As teams close in on 60 games played in the MLB season, the NL West division has continued to display how much of a powerhouse they are.

With the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants all within four games of each other, it's looking like it'll be a battle for the division title.

The Giants have seemed to run into a slump, going 9-14 over their last 23 games, and are looking to make adjustments to find the same success they had at the beginning of the season.

After losing their second straight extra-inning game on Tuesday, it's been announced that long-time first baseman Lamonte Wade Jr. has been designated for assignment.

After playing in 50 games for the Giants this season, Wade Jr. showed a dip in his hitting stats in comparison to 2024.

With a .167 BA, .275 OBP, .271 SLG, and a .546 OPS while hitting one home run and 15 RBI, Wade Jr.'s productions has dipped and manager Bob Melvin believed it was time to move on from the five-year Giants first baseman.

A move was ready to be made for the Giants after failing to score more than four runs in a game since May 16.

The Giants also made moves in designating backup catcher Sam Huff for assignment while signing journeyman first baseman Dominic Smith to a major league contract.

It seems that the team is ready to commit to Wilmer Flores at first base moving forward, as the veteran first baseman is currently top-10 in the MLB for RBI this season with 47.
