Giants’ Matt Chapman Shares Injury Update After Rafael Devers Trade

We don't blame the San Francisco Giants fans anxiously and eagerly awaiting a lineup featuring Rafael Devers and Matt Chapman.

Devers is already doing his part, and Chapman appears on pace to join him sooner than you'd think.

The Mercury News reported on Sunday that Chapman, who suffered a right hand injury earlier this month, got his split removed last Friday. Additionally, the Giants and Chapman hope he can start swinging on Tuesday.

Although Chapman is not expected to come off the IL this week, it sounds like he'll rejoin the club before the All-Star Game.

Chapman hit the injured list enjoying another strong season, batting .243 with 12 home runs, 30 RBI, and a .812 OPS—his highest since 2020—over 272 plate appearances. The five-time Gold Glove winner posted 2.9 bWAR in his first 65 games and is quickly justifying the six-year, $151 million contract extension he signed last September.

Barring an unprecedented change of plans, Chapman will immediately resume third base duties upon returning. Don't expect to see Devers manning the hot corner with Chapman becoming the full-time DH.

Speaking of Devers, he's started his Giants tenure with five hits, including a home run, in his first 23 at-bats. The Giants entered Wednesday at 44-34 and trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 3 1/2 games.
