Giants Place Logan Webb On Injured List

The Giants are shutting down Logan Webb, as Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that their staff ace is going on the injured list with a blister in his middle finger. Infielder Nate Furman also gets shut down with an oblique strain. They’ll be replaced on the active roster by outfielder Victor Bericoto and righty Duncan Davitt. Bericoto is back from a knee injury that has sidelined him for close to a month, while Davitt is recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the Giants previously revealed that Webb’s start on September 13 might be his final outing. The Padres teed off for six runs in five innings, his third clunker in his past five appearances. Webb has been solid overall but not as consistent as he’d been in previous seasons. He’ll finish the year with a 4.31 earned run average with a 50.7% ground-ball rate across 160 2/3 innings.

The Giants are playing out the string and have no reason to push Webb to make his final two starts if he’s feeling any discomfort. This is his second IL stint of the year, as he missed about three weeks with right knee bursitis in May. Webb is one of the league’s most durable pitchers and hadn’t previously missed a start since 2021.

Landen Roupp will probably finish the season as the team’s innings leader, as he’ll only need to throw another six innings over his last two starts to surpass Webb. They’ve been the only two pitchers who have occupied rotation spots for the bulk of the season. The rest of the group has either been traded (Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle) or suffered late-season injuries (Trevor McDonald, Adrian Houser).

Cesar Perdomo will take the ball against Tyler Glasnow to open this weekend’s series at Dodger Stadium. The Giants haven’t announced pitching plans beyond tonight, though Roupp will probably start one of those games. San Francisco will finish the season with a six-game homestand, hosting the Twins and then another set against the Dodgers. Minnesota is all but officially eliminated, so the only playoff implications of the final nine games are L.A.’s efforts to secure the top seed in the National League.
