Giants RHP Gregory Santos suspended 80 games for PED use

San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Gregory Santos made his MLB debut in April but won't be pitching for the club through the summer.

Per Maria Guardado of the league's website, Santos has been suspended 80 games after he tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol. The ban begins immediately (Tuesday) and is without pay.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Santos will forfeit roughly half his salary for the campaign. The 21-year-old tallied a 1-1 record with a 5.17 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, and he surrendered six runs and three home runs in his three MLB relief opportunities this spring before he was sent down.

"The San Francisco Giants are disappointed that Gregory Santos has violated the terms of Major League Baseball’s Drug Prevention and Treatment Program resulting in his suspension," the Giants said in a statement shared by Guardado. "The Giants organization fully supports the MLB program and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing substances from our game."
