The Pitching:
Miami's sending righty Cal Quantrill to the hill tonight to face Los Gigantes down in sunny Florida. It's been a pretty rough go for the 30-year-old vet so far this season — evidenced throughout the box score, down to the spreadsheets. Despite stringing together a few decent recent starts, I'm not buying whatever it is that Quantrill's selling.
Sure, the split-finger looks good occasionally, but don't kid yourself — no SP can succeed with a primary pitch missing the zone more than 50% of the time. Every professional's bound to excel sporadically but given the deflating underpinning metrics, I'm inclined to hard-sell the rip (opposite of buying the dip).
Let me tell you, the stats are ugly...
Hard to imagine how tough Quantrill's actually been on lefty bats (.209 BA, .632 OPS) given the circumstances. His problem's that the vast majority of opposing hitters bat from the right side and the L/R splits couldn't be more disparate. Right handed hitters are currently up to a .384 BA with an OPS north of 1.025 and .444 wOBA on the season — it's completely untenable.
The Hitting:
Quantrill's going to have to deal with OF Heliot Ramos, San Fran's 25-year-old breakout star, who's been on fire vs RHP the entire month of May (69 PA). If Quantrill plans on sneaking one of those bad four-seam or sinkers passed Ramos, good chance he regrets it and we'll be heading to the window.
Laghezza's Lean:
Love the chance for Heliot Ramos to go OVER 1.5 TOTAL BASES (-110) — Plus, we get the backdoor option of facing an atrocious Marlins bullpen if we whiff early. Not to mention SF's a favorite playing on the road, so there's no risk of losing the ninth frame to a victory. Let's go!
Important Note: Before endeavoring into total base props, first things first — REMEMBER, WALKS DO NOT COUNT! It always kills me whenever confusion occurs due to not understanding the rules after a loss. There's always (at least) one person in my social media DMs completely befuddled as to how a batter failed to cash a total base prop when they walked four times. Before placing any wager, please read the rules. Now that that's out of my system, let's get down to business.
