June has arrived and with a blink of an eye, the baseball season has already surpassed the two-month mark.
The New York Yankees were a team that many didn't know how to rank after losing Juan Soto, but after pivoting and bringing in multiple free agents, the Yankees have put together an impressive season so far.
Offensive performance
In the American League, through Wednesday, the Yankees lead in runs scored (322), home runs (97), batting average (.257), on-base percentage (.342), slugging (.463), walks (246) and extra-base hits (215).
Scoring at an AL best, 5.37 runs per game, the Yankees' offense has experienced some incredible highs. New York has put up double-digit runs on 10 separate occasions, second in the majors only behind the Cubs (12 times).
On the other hand, the Yankees have had a couple of games where the offense seemingly vanished. In 14 games, the Yankees scored two or fewer runs.
Different from other years, the offense hasn't solely relied on Aaron Judge. Including Judge, the Yankees have eight players with 25 RBI and four with more than 30, Cody Bellinger (32), Austin Wells (32), Anthony Volpe (34) and Judge (50).
Although he has help, Judge has been playing out of his mind. He's the odds-on favorite to win the AL MVP (-20000 on Fanduel) and the Triple Crown is in sight. He currently leads the majors in batting average (.389) and is second in the AL in home runs (21) and RBI.
Offensive Grade: A
Pitching performance
The grade for the Yankees' pitching will be split between their rotation and their bullpen.
Like New York's offense, the Yankees' pitching staff lost one of their key pieces, Gerrit Cole, for the season to Tommy John surgery.
In the American League, the Yankees' rotation ranks in the top five in ERA (3.51), hits allowed (253), earned runs (124), home runs allowed (36), strikeouts (338) and opponent average (.215).
The rotation has been spearheaded by the newly signed Max Fried and the resurging Carlos Rodon.
After a shaky start, Rodón (8-3) holds a 2.49 ERA (15th in MLB) with 98 strikeouts (fourth in MLB) and is holding opponents to an average of .167 (first in MLB). Fried (7-1) has been just as excellent this year as he has been maintaining a 1.92 ERA (fifth in MLB) with 70 Ks and leads the AL with a .875 win percentage.
The Yankee bullpen has dealt with inconsistency issues. Newly acquired closer Devin Williams lost his role to Luke Weaver after allowing 10 runs through his first 10 innings. With Weaver now injured, the Yankees are without their most reliable bullpen arm.
As a whole, the bullpen has a record of 12-10 with 18 saves (tied seventh in MLB) out of a potential 25 games, while their 3.69 bullpen ERA ranks in the middle of the MLB.
Rotation Grade: A-
Bullpen Grade: B
Overall grade and future expectations
Through two months, the season has been a resounding success. With a record of 37-23, the Yankees sit 2.5 games behind the Tigers for the best record in the MLB and currently hold a 5.5 game lead in the AL East.
For an overall grade, the Yankees receive an A for the first third of the season. Both offense and pitching seem like they are firing on all cylinders, but this team has yet to reach its full potential.
Players like Austin Wells, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jasson Dominguez are yet to fully hit their stride, while the team still awaits the returns of Luis Gil and Giancarlo Stanton.
The Yankees are already dangerous, but a fully healthy team can realistically make it back to the World Series for a second straight year.
