Guardians address comment that fan made to Red Sox OF Jarren Duran

The Cleveland Guardians have issued an apology for the situation on Sunday that led to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran having a heated confrontation with a fan.

Duran became furious with a heckling fan during the seventh inning of Boston’s 13-3 win over the Guardians at Progressive Field in Cleveland. He needed to be restrained from going after the fan, who said something after Duran flew out that set Duran off. Umpires stepped in and the situation did not escalate. You can see the video here.

Jahmai Webster said on the NESN television broadcast that the fan “said something that crossed the line.” Red Sox TV analyst Will Middlebrooks revealed that the fan told Duran something like “you should have killed yourself when you had the chance.”

Following the game, the Guardians issued a statement vowing to address the incident.

In a Netflix series that aired earlier this month, Duran revealed that he attempted to commit suicide in 2022. That is why he became so angry over the alleged comment on Sunday.

Duran has gotten himself into trouble by responding to hecklers in the past, but in this instance it seems the Guardians believe the fan was at fault.

The 28-year-old Duran is in his fifth MLB season with the Red Sox. He has batted .276 through 29 games this year.
