The Cleveland Guardians are fighting to hold their spot in the American League Wild Card race, and Tuesday’s lineup card was missing one of the bats that they’ve been counting on all summer.
Right fielder Chase DeLauter was out of the starting lineup with soreness Tuesday, a day after feeling something in his right wrist during his last at-bat Monday against the Chicago White Sox. His status is day-to-day.
It’s the third time DeLauter has dealt with an injury absence this season. He missed 12 games in June with a rib cage fracture, then sprained the same right wrist during a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on September 4. He returned to the lineup after that scare eased, only for the discomfort to return on Monday.
The Guardians have avoided placing DeLauter on the injured list through the earlier flare-up, managing his workload between right field and designated hitter rather than losing him for an extended period. That approach has left manager Stephen Vogt to build lineups around shifting players in and out as Cleveland tries to close out the schedule with a healthy team.
Infielder Angel Martinez is dealing with his own issue. He was removed from Monday’s game against the White Sox after wincing on a check swing in the seventh inning, then departed the eighth entirely. The Guardians have described his injury as right-side discomfort, and he is also considered day-to-day.
Tom Withers of the Associated Press reported the updates on Tuesday.

Chase DeLauter (wrist) came in sore today after feeling something in his last AB on Monday. He’s day to day.
Angel Martinez (flank) avoided a serious injury and is also day to day.
Cleveland entered Tuesday clinging to a Wild Card spot, and every lineup decision carries weight down the stretch. With DeLauter hitting .289 with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a .815 OPS this season, getting him back to full strength means the most towards keeping the Guardians’ October hopes alive.
