With the Cleveland Guardians surging in the AL Central race, the team is looking to be fully healthy by the time the postseason comes around, as the team has been without slugger Rhys Hoskins. As the Guardians prepare for the playoffs, the latest injury update on Hoskins has been revealed.
Hoskins has not played for Cleveland since Aug 18.’s game against the San Francisco Giants, where he went on the 10-day injured list (IL), as he’s dealing with lower back inflammation. While he’s reportedly “feeling better,” the 33-year-old “has not resumed baseball activities.”
According to Tim Stebbins at MLB.com, manager Stephen Vogt said Hoskins had felt lingering lower back tightness during the series against the Chicago White Sox from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9. Also feeling it during that Aug. 18 game against San Francisco, he would go through an MRI the next day, leading to the IL stint.
“He felt like he just wasn’t himself, and so we felt like it was time for him to go on IL,” Vogt said at the time.
So far this season with the Guardians, Hoskins has recorded a .179 batting average to go along with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs in 95 games and 263 at-bats. Hoskins’ role was taking a lot of at-bats against left-handed pitchers, as Vogt said after Cleveland put the veteran on the IL that the hope is that the stint away could have him “feeling good for the home stretch” ahead.
“We haven’t had a whole lot of versatility on our roster the last few weeks,” Vogt said. “Unfortunate news on Rhys, obviously. We’re hoping that this stint can get him back to feeling good for the home stretch. But good to have David and his versatility back.”
At any rate, the next nine games are at home, with the hope that he could come back during that time, though the latest update on not resuming baseball activities could put a dent in the plans. The Guardians are currently 68-67, which puts them second in the AL Central, three-and-a-half games back of first.
