Guardians Manager Stephen Vogt Shares Thoughts On 2024 Coaching Staff

Yesterday, the Cleveland Guardians announced their 2024 Major League coaching staff, making five new additions from 2023.

Stephen Vogt then discussed his first-ever coaching staff as an MLB manager.

On What He Looked For

“The best coaches I ever had have cared about the people. They cared about the person first. They put themselves on the back burner. It’s not about them, it’s about the players. And, obviously, very knowledgeable in their area from a technical standpoint as well. That’s obviously very important. But really just people who understand that this is about the team, this is about the players. And they elevate themselves to help the players get better every single day.”

On Keeping Carl Willis, Sandy Alomar Jr., and Chris Valaika

“The experience levels of Carl and Sandy, and their wealth of knowledge, and just, their love for Cleveland and the players here, they’re going to be a huge, huge help for me. And bringing Chris back, and having the continuity with the hitting group, just going into this year, I think was really important. So, really feel good about everybody who’s coming back, as well as the new guys.”

On Many Internal Additions

“The best part, my favorite part, is that a majority of these are internal. And the Cleveland organization as a whole, the Minor Leagues, the player development system, has been so strong in helping guys get to the Big Leagues. And now, to be able to promote from within, I think is such a huge, huge thing for us to do.”
