Guardians Provide Chase DeLauter Update During Orioles Series

The Cleveland Guardians received encouraging news on Chase DeLauter’s injured right wrist ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Stephen Vogt said the rookie outfielder is “feeling a lot better” and remains day-to-day.

DeLauter was held out of Cleveland’s lineup for Monday’s game, but his pregame activity offered another positive sign. He was seen catching flyballs in right field and was cleared to participate in batting practice despite the wrist sprain.

The update was first reported by Tim Stebbins, with MLB.com also reporting that DeLauter was dealing with the wrist issue. The Guardians are taking a cautious approach rather than immediately placing the 24-year-old on the Injured List.

Vogt said DeLauter is “feeling a lot better.” He’s going to hit today and is currently taking flyballs in right field hit by outfield coach JT Maguire.

DeLauter suffered the injury during Friday’s doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers and missed the remainder of the weekend. The timing is particularly important for Cleveland, which entered Monday holding the final American League Wild Card spot.

His absence could leave the Guardians without one of their more productive young bats during a critical stretch. DeLauter has hit .294 with a .365 on-base percentage, .458 slugging percentage, 13 home runs, 28 doubles and 10 stolen bases across 120 games this season.

Monday’s 6-4 loss to Baltimore only increased the pressure on Cleveland. The Guardians fell to 73-72, while the Orioles moved to 70-75 and closed within three games of the final Wild Card position.

DeLauter has already dealt with significant time away this season after suffering a right-side rib fracture in June. He also exited a game in August because of an abdominal/side issue, making the Guardians’ cautious handling of his latest injury understandable.

For now, Cleveland appears to have avoided the worst-case scenario. Vogt’s update leaves the door open for DeLauter to return soon, potentially giving the Guardians an important offensive boost as the Wild Card race tightens.
